Supporting aspiring educators

The Graduate School of Education is an exciting place to study — a genuine community of scholars dedicated to improving our understanding of human development, learning and teaching, and the wide-ranging contexts in which they take place. Our students are deeply engaged in high-quality research and preparing themselves to help today's learners thrive in education, the world of work, and society.

In order to attract the most committed, creative graduate students to UC Berkeley, fellowship support is critical. More than ever, the field of education requires teachers from diverse backgrounds who are culturally competent and well prepared to address the most difficult challenges in public schools. Since most aspiring educators cannot anticipate high salaries after graduation to repay student loans, the availability of financial support often determines where they will pursue graduate studies. GSE's student body is one of the most diverse on campus, a quality we must preserve. Supporting fellowships impacts not only our graduates, but the thousands of students, families, and communities they will serve.

Ensuring faculty excellence

The Graduate School of Education can only continue its distinguished tradition of service by recruiting and supporting the most intelligent minds and best practitioners in the field. Our faculty are internationally renowned for their contributions to the quickly changing field of education — from teaching math, science, and reading to a broad range of learners, to grappling with complex issues in school reform, public policy, and finance.

In order to meet the demand for a new generation of highly skilled educators, researchers, and policymakers, it is imperative that we continue to attract and retain outstanding faculty. Faculty support, including endowed chairs and distinguished professorships, provides research funding for scholars working on some of education's most critical challenges.

Advancing Scholary Inquiry - Strengthening K-12 Education

The Graduate School of Education is a hub of research that cuts across critical lines of inquiry, from examining the growth of literacy and language among impoverished preschool children to integrating the arts throughout K–12 education. The California College Preparatory Academy (Cal Prep) provides a living, real-world laboratory for designing and testing our research. Co-led by UC Berkeley and a leading management organization, Aspire Public Schools, this charter school prepares urban students in grades 6 through 12 who will be the first in their families to attend college by immersing them in a culture of high academic expectations and extraordinary supports. GSE faculty and students regularly examine how the children are learning and help Cal Prep adapt to best meet their needs. Cal Prep is building a model program
for success.

In addition, GSE collaborates with groups across campus in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and psychology to design learning environments and curriculum materials. Partnering with two preeminent research initiatives focused on social and global justice — the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity at Berkeley Law and the new Berkeley Diversity Research Initiative — we are addressing the vital role of public education in an equitable society and ensuring that underrepresented communities are included in education policy discussions.
