Overview

The Berkeley Graduate School of Education is a strong and vibrant educational institution, widely regarded for its research, teaching, and influence on the practice of education. As a professional school, the Graduate School of Education has a dual mission:
• to engage in research and development of the highest quality at the forefront of educational inquiry and innovation; and
• to use the knowledge gained in research to provide unexcelled leadership, training, and service for the field of education, in order to enhance opportunities for diverse communities of learners.

Berkeley is consistently rated among the top graduate schools of education in the United States. Some of the most distinguished teachers and scholars give classes at UC Berkeley, and the university’s faculty includes six Nobel laureates. The quality of the students complements the stature of the faculty. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education encourages a wide range of applications in order to reflect the rich mix of cultures in California and the U.S. Many countries are also represented by international students. While studying at Berkeley, most students live in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, one of the world’s most vital centers of technology, business, and culture, and also the nation’s most scenic metropolitan area.

More than 40 projects with extramural funding are currently being conducted at the Graduate School of Education, including the renowned National Writing Project.

Faculty and students strive to bridge the gap between theory and practice through innovative partnerships with the public schools and the community. The Berkeley Graduate School of Education is committed to addressing the most challenging educational issues of our era.
