"The problems of education are merely reflections of the deepest problems of our age. They cannot be solved by organization, administration, or the expenditure of money, even though the importance of all these is not denied. We are suffering from a metaphysical disease, and the cure must therefore be metaphysical. Education which fails to clarify our central convictions is mere training and indulgence. For it is our central convictions that are in disorder, and, as long as the present anti-metaphysical temper persists, the disorder will grow worse. Education, far from ranking as man's greatest resource, will then be an agent of destruction..." Schumacher, E.F., small is beautiful: economics as if people mattered.
"[T]oday education...isolates children from their culture and from nature, training them instead to become narrow specialists in a Westernized urban environment. This process is particularly striking in Ladakh, where modern schooling acts almost as a blindfold, preventing children from seeing the context in which they live. They leave school unable to use their own resources, unable to function in their own world. *** Everything in school promotes the Western model and, as a direct consequence, makes them ashamed of their own traditions." Norberg-Hodge, Helena, Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh.
"[A]utocensorship begins at a very early age through a socialization process that is also a form of indoctrination that works against independent thought in favor of obedience. Schools function as a mechanism of this socialization. The goal is to keep people from asking questions that matter about important issues that directly affect them and others." Chomsky, Noam, Chomsky on MisEducation.
Lionel also serves as the Buddhist Chaplain at the San Francisco County Juvenile Hall and teaches stress management meditation at the SF County jail where he is known as Li (as in Jet Li).
